HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CLIMB MOUNT KILIMANJARO?
Planning your Kilimanjaro adventure? One of the most common questions we hear is:
“How many days does it take to climb Mount Kilimanjaro?”
The answer depends on the route you choose and how well your body acclimatizes to high altitude. Generally, it takes 5 to 9 days to trek to Uhuru Peak—the summit of Kilimanjaro—and return to the base.
The more days you spend on the mountain, the higher your chances of successfully reaching the summit. Trekkers who opt for 5-day routes have the lowest summit success rate, while those who take 8 or 9 days have a significantly higher chance of making it to the top.
WHY DOES IT TAKE THAT LONG?
Mount Kilimanjaro is a “walk-up” mountain—meaning no technical climbing is involved. However, the main challenge lies in adjusting to the decreasing oxygen levels at higher altitudes.
Acclimatization is key. Most unsuccessful summit attempts are due to altitude sickness caused by rapid ascent without proper adjustment time.
According to the Wilderness Medical Society, controlling your rate of ascent is the most effective way to prevent altitude illness. A slow, steady approach allows your body time to adapt and rest after each day's hike.
Fitness helps reduce fatigue, but it does not improve your body’s ability to acclimatize. In fact, many fit climbers push too hard and ignore early symptoms of altitude sickness, risking their summit success and health.
CLIMBING SUCCESS RATES BASED ON DAYS SPENT
- 5-day route: Approx. 27% summit success rate
- 8-day route: Approx. 85% summit success rate
While these figures are from earlier years, improved guiding and equipment have likely increased success rates. Still, the pattern is clear: longer routes offer better outcomes.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE ON EACH ROUTE?
There are six main routes to climb Kilimanjaro. Some are shorter but more intense, while others are longer and offer better acclimatization:
Route | Typical Duration | Route Length |
---|---|---|
Marangu Route | 5 Days | 64 km (40 mi) |
Umbwe Route | 6 Days | 37 km (23 mi) |
Rongai Route | 6–7 Days | 65 km (40 mi) |
Machame Route | 6–7 Days | 49 km (30 mi) |
Lemosho Route | 7–9 Days | 66 km (41 mi) |
Northern Circuit | 8–9 Days | 66 km (41 mi) |
IS IT WORTH CLIMBING IN 5 OR 6 DAYS?
While it’s possible to complete the climb in 5 or 6 days, we rarely recommend it. Shorter treks may seem appealing due to lower cost and limited vacation time, but they come with higher risks of altitude sickness and a lower success rate.
We always encourage trekkers to choose longer itineraries when possible. They are safer, more enjoyable, and greatly increase your chances of reaching the summit.
WHEN A SHORTER CLIMB MIGHT BE OKAY
There are a few scenarios where a shorter route might work:
- You’ve recently been at high altitude (e.g., climbed Mount Meru or Mount Kenya)
- You’re an experienced high-altitude climber and confident in your acclimatization abilities
Even in these cases, caution is essential. We advise consulting with your tour operator before committing to a shorter itinerary.
HOW LONG DOES THE DESCENT TAKE?
Descending Kilimanjaro typically takes 2 days:
- Day 1: 4–5 hours to reach the base camp for an overnight stay
- Day 2: 4–6 hours hiking down to the final exit gate
The descent is significantly faster than the ascent, but still requires caution and stamina, especially on tired legs.
PLAN YOUR PERFECT CLIMB
To maximize your chances of reaching the summit and enjoying your adventure, we highly recommend choosing a longer route. Build in time to rest, acclimatize, and take in the awe-inspiring views along the way.
